Templates are useful for creating reports in a minute or if you have the same report structure across all your clients.
First of all, you have the option to create a report out of the template or have it linked to the template.
You can decide at this point of the report creation:
The difference is the following:
When the report is not linked to the template, you can edit anything in the report.
When the report is still linked to the template you can't add more widgets or remove them. You can't edit the settings BUT you can edit some filters. If you want to make changes, you have to enter the template. Just notice that if you make changes to the template, all linked reports will also update.

Also, notice that if you unlink the report from the template, you can't link it back.
